Dupont Underground

The Dupont Underground is a 501(c)(3) cultural organization committed to developing a multidisciplinary platform for creative expression. We are transforming a public work – the subterranean streetcar station in Dupont Circle – into a new public infrastructure to support creative exchange, contemporary arts practice, and an ongoing conversation about the city.

Our goal is to foster programming that encourages the public to create and engage with the leading edge of contemporary expression in the visual, environmental, and performing arts. We are particularly interested in the place where that expression crosses disciplinary boundaries and is informed by areas such as technology, science, philosophy, and commerce. We strive to reflect the diversity of our community – both artists and audiences. We endeavor to host projects and work that might not be an easy fit in the District’s more conventional cultural venues.

The Dupont Underground comprises 75,000 sq.ft. of repurposed infrastructural space less than a mile from the White House. It lies beneath the city’s iconic Dupont Circle, a nexus of Washington’s cultural, civic, and commercial life. There is no other space like it in the District. Opened in 1949 as a trolley station, 75,000 sq.ft. of underground platforms and tunnels were closed off in 1962, when the city’s streetcar system shut down. Other than designation as fallout shelter in the late 1960s and hosting a short-lived food court on the west platform in the mid-1990s, the space has remained empty. Until now.

(2) Yelp had a monthly average of 21 million unique visitors who visited Yelp via the Yelp app and 69 million unique visitors who visited Yelp via mobile web in Q1 2016. (3) Yelpers have written more than 102 million reviews by the end of Q1 2016. (4) In addition to reviews, you can use Yelp to find events, lists and to talk with other Yelpers. Tito’s Vodka

In 1995, Tito Beveridge (yeah, his real name) had the idea of building his own microdistillery incorporating the boutique winery concept into the spirits industry. He aquired the first legal permit to distill in Texas and put his life savings into it, racking up 19 credit cards to build his own stills and condensers. Since then, he has won the World Spirits Competition and has turned his handmade vodka into the fastest growing spirit brand in the country through the power of word of mouth. Available in all 50 states now, people love to tell their friends about the underdog distiller named Tito who makes an exceptionally smooth vodka and sells it at a fair price. Tito still makes his vodka by hand on the same land wher he started it all in Austin, Texas.

Final Draft

Marc Madnick moved to Los Angeles in 1986 to follow his dream of being a screenwriter. Like many aspiring and professional screenwriters of the time, he found the process of writing a script trying and time-consuming.  The problem was not a lack of ideas, but rather the lack of any word-processor capable of automatically formatting a script to Hollywood’s stringent standards. This experience led Madnick and former partner Ben Cahan to the creation of Final Draft, a fully dedicated screenwriting software application that automatically formats your script to Hollywood’s industry standards.  A very strategic marketer, Madnick knew that if he could convince Hollywood’s heaviest hitters (Tom Hanks, Oliver Stone, and Lawrence Kasdan, to name a few) that Final Draft software will save them time and money, he’d have a chance at success. Just five years after its inception and Madnick’s aggressive marketing campaign, Final Draft screenwriting software had become the entertainment industry standard for screenwriting and the market leader among its competitors worldwide. With the company now in its 25th year and the ninth version of the software, Final Draft, the application and its brand, continues to grow in popularity and into new markets throughout the world.

In 2013, Final Draft was awarded the prestigious Prime time Emmy Engineering Award. In 2016, Final Draft was acquired by Cast & Crew Entertainment Services. Based in Burbank, California, and with offices across the U.S. and in Canada, Cast & Crew is a trusted partner to major and independent film and television studios.  Cast & Crew provides clients with a robust portfolio of critical services.  These include payroll and residuals processing, the industry-leading PSL production accounting system and other software, as well as financial services such as production incentive consulting, administration and financing.  Cast & Crew continues to accelerate its investment in technology, supported by majority shareholder Silver Lake Partners, the global leader in technology investing, which acquired Cast & Crew in mid-2015.

ZICO Coconut Water

The story of ZICO® Coconut Water ; begins in Central America, where, while volunteering with the Peace Corps, founder Mark Rampolla took notice that the locals regularly drank sweet coconut water for replenishment. Back in the States, in 2004, Mark left his corporate career to create ZICO® Coconut Water, initially selling it out of a van to New York City yoga studios. He couldn’t make it quickly enough; customers were hooked on its refreshing taste and hydrating benefits. The story goes on to Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines, where our suppliers source coconuts from hundreds of local farmers and work directly with coconut plantations – many that have been in families for generations to bring you crisp, delicious ZICO. Our story continues with you. We’re passionate about finding ways to help everyone achieve the balance they need throughout the day, and think ZICO’s hydration benefits can be one small step towards that balance, whether you seek them out in your cubicle, at the kitchen table, after a run, or in a moment to yourself.

Bruegger’s

Everyone knows that New York City is the home of the best-tasting, most authentic bagels anywhere. So when the idea for Bruegger’s was born in in 1983, the first thing we did was head for the Big Apple. We learned the time-honored, traditional methods that had made New York famous for bagels like kettle-cooking the bagels, then baking in a real stone hearth oven. We spent two and a half years working with a professional bagel baker to perfect our recipe and process. Then we set off on our mission to introduce the authentic taste of New York-style bagels to the rest of America. But our neighboring state played an important role, too. Real made-in-Vermont cream cheese provides the smooth, delicious foundation for a dozen unique blends you’ll find only in our bakeries. From Onion & Chive to Jalapeño to Bacon Scallion, there’s a spread to complement every bagel — and every craving.

Capitol Hill Arts Workshop

The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop’s (CHAW’s) mission is to build community through the arts. It is a community-based, not-for-profit organization founded in 1972 by Sally Crowell and other community members who were interested in sharing their artistic expertise with children and adults. Arts instruction classes were held in several Capitol Hill churches until, in the late 1970’s, the organization obtained the use of the old B.B. French School (545 Seventh St, SE) from the District of Columbia government. CHAW embarked on an extensive renovation of the facility (which had been closed for many years) through a partnership with the Marines of the 8th & I Street Barracks, neighborhood businesses, and local residents. Federal financial support from the U.S. Department of the Interior helped to fund the endeavor. The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop moved into the fully renovated building in 1980.

The Workshop facility includes a dance studio (which doubles as a recital hall), paint studio, black box theater, art gallery, complete ceramics/pottery studio, a photography darkroom (the only “open” darkroom in D.C.), private music instruction studios, and business offices. The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop is located in a racially and economically diverse neighborhood. Students, artists, faculty, audiences, and staff come from diverse communities throughout the Capital Region – and especially from Capitol Hill. CHAW is continually evolving to meet the needs of the community.

Green Hat Distilled Gin

New Columbia Distillers is a family business owned by Michael Lowe and his wife, Melissa Kroning and John Uselton and his wife, Elizabeth Lowe. John and Michael come to their passion for craft distilling by wearing many hats in the restaurant and liquor business—not to mention the military and legal worlds. From Houston to Boston to Washington, John has worked in all capacities of front-of-house restaurant work—from humble busboy to award-winning bar- tender to savvy manager. Michael spent a couple of years on a Navy submarine and a few more at private DC law firms. He retired from the law in 2008, bought himself several cocktail books and started investigating the art and science of distilling.

In 2011 John and Michael were the first to bring craft distilling to DC. After a brief apprenticeship with Dry Fly Distillery, they located a home for their distillery in a 90-year-old warehouse near the Art Deco landmark Hecht Co. warehouse on New York Ave. When they learned the history of The Man In The Green Hat, they knew they had a name for DC’s own signature gin.

Half Pops

WE ARE A SMALL TEAM OF PEOPLE WHO EMBRACE CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION – WE JUST HAPPEN TO REALLY LOVE FOOD. It all started with an idea, a slightly obsessed founder, some uncooked popcorn and lots and lots of testing. Mike Fitzgerald (Fitz) was on a mission to perfect the process on how to create a crunchier version of popcorn…you know, the best part. Conceptually, it sounds pretty easy to do…but easy, it wasn’t, or someone probably would’ve figured this out a long time ago. Fitz was crazy about the idea (and possibly a little crazy in general) so he built a small factory hoping to find the perfect popcorn crunch. A couple of years and tens of thousands of pounds of popcorn later, he finally nailed it! Family and friends around Seattle were gobbling it up. Since all great ideas deserve such treatment a US Patent was filed, a brand name was created (Halfpops…genius) and Halfpops were available in stores in April of 2011. The business was born.

LumaForge

We are a group of filmmakers, editors, colorists, and creatives building the tools we need to tell our stories. There are server companies that have gone into the movie business, and then there are movie people who’ve gone into the server business… we are the latter. If you asked any of us a few years ago whether we thought we’d be running a technology company we’d have laughed you out of the room. Storage and servers are boring, not sexy at all, and have very little to do with actually making movies. Besides, at the time everything seemed to be working well enough; movies were getting made, nobody was complaining too much, and if we just kept buying bigger hard drives every couple of years we’d be right as rain. Then came cheap 4K, FCPX , Resolve, Creative Cloud and “collaborative workflow” and the cracks began to show. The computers were fast enough, and the software was amazing, but there was something holding us back… can you guess what it was?

We didn’t need bigger hard drives and faster RAID’s, what we needed was for everyone to work together from one place; we needed to collaborate. Well, too bad. Soon the idea of buying a never-ending supply of external hard drives to go with our new cameras bummed us out no matter what version of Thunderbolt it supported. If nobody was going to give us what we wanted, we would have to do it ourselves. Over the last 4 years we reluctantly became experts on anything and everything related to storage, networking, workflow, and digital filmmaking. We’ve tested, broken, and bricked more expensive pieces of silicon and asked more dumb questions to very smart people than we’d care to admit, but our cause was noble. We just want a better way to make movies.

During our R&D phase we realized that even the “big guys” with their half-million dollar SANs and complex fibre channel networks weren’t happy either. Editors on a shared network practically needed an IT degree to cut a movie, as well as anger management classes to cope with beachballs and latency. It turns out this storage problem was much bigger than we thought, and it became crystal clear that the storage technology that made the digital revolution possible a decade ago wasn’t going to cut it in today’s world of modern content creation and consumption. The entire model had to be reimagined; we were back to the drawing board. Fast-forward to today and you’ve got a technology company run by story tellers who are constantly trying to push the envelope. We hope you like what we’ve done.

– Sam, Eric & Josh

Miracle Theatre

History

The Miracle Theatre is located on Capitol Hill in the historic Barracks Row neighborhood. The original building, the Meader Theater, opened on December 27, 1909 as a vaudeville theatre with a mix of entertainment, including motion pictures and live performances. The building continued to operate as a movie theatre under several names until 1960: Meader, New Meader, Family and Academy. During the theatre’s many transitions and renovations it showed a variety of films including silent, triple-feature westerns and in the late 1950s, foreign films. In 1962, The People’s Church purchased the building and served the Capitol Hill community for half a century. On March 23, 2011, National Community Church purchased it, launching its seventh location in the metro DC area and embarking on a mission to revive the building’s rich history as a movie house and live entertainment destination.

Today

The Miracle Theatre is a second-run movie theater and live performance venue, and the newest oldest movie theater in Washington, DC. Albert Einstein once said, “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” A well-created story transports. It provokes thought and invites us to reimagine. It inspires and beckons us to experience the everyday miracles all around. At The Miracle, we celebrate great art, music, and storytelling that is beautiful, truthful, aspirational, or just plain fun. Come to The Miracle and be transported. Let us make your day miraculous

They are then given a character, prop and line to include in their films. On Sunday night, in a wild dash to the drop off event, the film is turned in – and teams celebrate. Day Eight’s programming strives to expand the understanding of possibility, inspired by the act of creation as necessarily connected to a moment in time. Remembering the moment of creation – this moment – may be helpful in allowing creation of future days that are happier, healthier, and more fun.

Double Exposure: Investigative Film Festival and Symposium

In recent years, the creative landscape of films inspired by investigative reporting has flowered in unexpected and exciting ways, and across a variety of genres and platforms. Yet this flourishing of creativity comes just as the rights of journalists and visual storytellers are challenged on nearly every level—legally, financially, logistically and in terms of safety. And despite their common ground, journalists and filmmakers often remain strangers to each other. They tend to operate in distinct silos within their own ecosystems, missing out on the critical opportunity to interact and engage in an exchange of ideas, resources, and best practices.

Filmfest DC

For over 30 years, Filmfest DC has sought to keep pace with global cultural and social activities. Today we find ourselves in a conundrum of opposing beliefs and shifting governmental policies, which have often divided citizens and forged a culture of “us vs. them.” As a reflection of our times, this year’s festival has taken on a special focus on issues ripped from today’s headlines in hopes of increasing clarity and civil discourse.

Our Opening Night feature, This is Our Land, looks at what can happen when a community faced with new immigrants and threatened job security becomes the target of right-wing operatives. The Justice Matters section of social issues films has been expanded and this year we have added Division & Debate, a new section exploring timely contentious issues. The Lighter Side section of international comedies, Trust No One, our thriller and espionage section and the Global Rhythms music series continue to be festival staples, along with World View, the core of the festival’s international program.

Filmfest DC would not be possible without the support of our Board of Directors, sponsors, staff, and hundreds of volunteers. Many people have generously shared their time and talent with us, and we want to deeply thank them. Good movies make the world a better place. Please join us for debut works by gifted directors, and a broad array of award-winning films from around the globe. We invite you to our annual adventure. We are very pleased to bid you welcome.

Immigration Film Festival

October 20 – 23, 2016

We are a group of unpaid volunteers working year-round to produce an annual film festival bringing stories of immigrants and refugees to Capital area audiences.  The Immigration Film Festival is under the wing of the Washington Ethical Society, a nonprofit, humanistic religious congregation. Since it serves as the Festival’s fiscal sponsor, all donations are 100% tax free and dedicated exclusively to the Festival.  Our goal is to put faces on immigrants and tell the stories of global immigration through film, the most popular of media. We do this not only to entertain but also to inform and inspire action. We live in an interconnected web of being. Recognizing this, we aim to motivate viewers to take action to correct the injustices that lead to migration and the dislocations that result from immigration.

March on Washington Film Festival

2017 FESTIVAL DATES: July 13th – July 22nd

“The focus of the entire film festival is the untold or lesser told stories of the civil rights movement. A focus on the thousands of men and women who courageously worked to make this nation whole.” -Robert Raben, festival founder

The March on Washington Film Festival strives to increase awareness of the events and heroes of the Civil Rights Era and inspire renewed passion for activism. The festival leverages the broad appeal of film, music, and the arts to tell these important stories to a wide audience. This year’s festival will span three cities—Atlanta, Washington, and New York—where we will host several film screenings. Each screening will be followed by a panel discussion. These intimate and meaningful conversations made the inaugural festival a runaway success. We will once again pair films with live musical performances that reflect the songs and spirit of the era.

Intelligent story not only entertains, but it truly can change the world. A well-told story captures our imagination, makes us laugh, forces us to reflect, and inspires transformation. And so the purpose of the Washington West Film Festival is to celebrate innovative and impassioned film that will both comfort and challenge our audiences who, in turn, can make lasting, tangible differences in our world.  At Washington West, we will screen and, in many cases, premiere some of the finest independent films from all around the world in three in-competition categories: dramatic features, documentary features, and short films. As we mature, we will expand our programming to include major Hollywood studio releases, giving established filmmakers the opportunity to unveil their story before a conscientious audience in one of the world’s most influential cities. We want to connect artists – emerging and renowned – with audiences who are eager for a unique cinematic experience, and together, make the world a little bit brighter.

WERA 96.7

WERA’s mission is to enlighten, enrich, and entertain Arlington’s diverse community by promoting and facilitating independent radio. On December 6, 2015, Arlington, Virginia entered a new era with the introduction of WERA-LP 96.7 onto the FM dial. A project of Arlington Independent Media, WERA’s programming is produced by and for the community. WERA is an outlet for anyone interested in creating, producing, and delivering broadcast-quality content to the Arlington community and surrounding area. WERA-LP features local-centric programming brought to you by talented and dedicated volunteer producers working in a wide variety of genres and styles to bring the sights and sounds of the Arlington area to our listeners. WERA-LP is Arlington’s only radio station. Broader coverage of DC and Northern Virginia often overshadows the news, events, people, stories, and culture that define one of the most diverse and innovative communities in the country. But WERA-LP and wera.fm will provide an opportunity for all Arlingtonians to raise their voices and share their perspectives – and listen to their friends and neighbors as they produce and deliver their own community radio programs.
