Dupont Underground
The Dupont Underground is a 501(c)(3) cultural organization committed to developing a multidisciplinary platform for creative expression. We are transforming a public work – the subterranean streetcar station in Dupont Circle – into a new public infrastructure to support creative exchange, contemporary arts practice, and an ongoing conversation about the city.
Our goal is to foster programming that encourages the public to create and engage with the leading edge of contemporary expression in the visual, environmental, and performing arts. We are particularly interested in the place where that expression crosses disciplinary boundaries and is informed by areas such as technology, science, philosophy, and commerce. We strive to reflect the diversity of our community – both artists and audiences. The Dupont Underground comprises 75,000 sq.ft. of repurposed infrastructural space less than a mile from the White House. It lies beneath the city’s iconic Dupont Circle, a nexus of Washington’s cultural, civic, and commercial life. There is no other space like it in the District. Opened in 1949 as a trolley station, 75,000 sq.ft. of underground platforms and tunnels were closed off in 1962, when the city’s streetcar system shut down. Other than designation as fallout shelter in the late 1960s and hosting a short-lived food court on the west platform in the mid-1990s, the space has remained empty. Until now.

Final Draft
Marc Madnick moved to Los Angeles in 1986 to follow his dream of being a screenwriter. Capitol Hill Arts Workshop
The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop’s (CHAW’s) mission is to build community through the arts. It is a community-based, not-for-profit organization founded in 1972 by Sally Crowell and other community members who were interested in sharing their artistic expertise with children and adults. Arts instruction classes were held in several Capitol Hill churches until, in the late 1970’s, the organization obtained the use of the old B.B. French School (545 Seventh St, SE) from the District of Columbia government. CHAW embarked on an extensive renovation of the facility (which had been closed for many years) through a partnership with the Marines of the 8th & I Street Barracks, neighborhood businesses, and local residents. Federal financial support from the U.S. Department of the Interior helped to fund the endeavor. The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop moved into the fully renovated building in 1980.
The Workshop facility includes a dance studio (which doubles as a recital hall), paint studio, black box theater, art gallery, complete ceramics/pottery studio, a photography darkroom (the only “open” darkroom in D.C.), private music instruction studios, and business offices.The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop is located in a racially and economically diverse neighborhood. Students, artists, faculty, audiences, and staff come from diverse communities throughout the Capital Region – and especially from Capitol Hill. CHAW is continually evolving to meet the needs of the community.

GALA Hispanic Theater
GALA (Grupo de Artistas Latinoamericanos) Hispanic Theatre is a National Center for Latino Performing Arts in the nation’s capital. Since 1976 GALA has been promoting and sharing the Latino arts and cultures with a diverse audience, creating work that speaks to communities today, and preserving the rich Hispanic heritage for generations that follow. By developing and producing works that explore the breadth of Latino performing arts, GALA provides opportunities for the Latino artist, educates youth, and engages the entire community in an exchange of ideas and perspectives. GALA has staged over 200 productions, ranging from classical Spanish theater to contemporary Latin American plays, original musicals, and works by local Latino youth; toured elementary schools with bilingual children’s programs; and participated in national and international theater festivals.
GALA partners regularly with other local arts groups, including the In Series, Young Playwrights’ Theater, and Washington Performing Arts Society, with whom it co-presents the annual ArteAmericA series. Over the years, ArteAmericA has introduced Washington D.C. audiences to over 100 established and cutting-edge performing artists, including Tito Puente, Guillermo Gómez Peña, Lila Downs, and Gilberto Gil, and provided hundreds of local school children the opportunity to participate in workshops with these talents.

New Columbia Distillers is a family business owned by Michael Lowe and his wife, Melissa Kroning and John Uselton and his wife, Elizabeth Lowe. John and Michael come to their passion for craft distilling by wearing many hats in the restaurant and liquor business—not to mention the military and legal worlds. From Houston to Boston to Washington, John has worked in all capacities of front-of-house restaurant work—from humble busboy to award-winning bar- tender to savvy manager. Michael spent a couple of years on a Navy submarine and a few more at private DC law firms. He retired from the law in 2008, bought himself several cocktail books and started investigating the art and science of distilling.
In 2011 John and Michael were the first to bring craft distilling to DC. WE ARE A SMALL TEAM OF PEOPLE WHO EMBRACE CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION – WE JUST HAPPEN TO REALLY LOVE FOOD. It all started with an idea, a slightly obsessed founder, some uncooked popcorn and lots and lots of testing. Mike Fitzgerald (Fitz) was on a mission to perfect the process on how to create a crunchier version of popcorn…you know, the best part. Conceptually, it sounds pretty easy to do…but easy, it wasn’t, or someone probably would’ve figured this out a long time ago. Fitz was crazy about the idea (and possibly a little crazy in general) so he built a small factory hoping to find the perfect popcorn crunch. A couple of years and tens of thousands of pounds of popcorn later, he finally nailed it! Family and friends around Seattle were gobbling it up. Since all great ideas deserve such treatment a US Patent was filed, a brand name was created (Halfpops…genius) and Halfpops were available in stores in April of 2011. The business was born.

We are a group of filmmakers, editors, colorists, and creatives building the tools we need to tell our stories. There are server companies that have gone into the movie business, and then there are movie people who’ve gone into the server business… we are the latter. If you asked any of us a few years ago whether we thought we’d be running a technology company we’d have laughed you out of the room. Storage and servers are boring, not sexy at all, and have very little to do with actually making movies. Besides, at the time everything seemed to be working well enough; movies were getting made, nobody was complaining too much, and if we just kept buying bigger hard drives every couple of years we’d be right as rain. Then came cheap 4K, FCPX , Resolve, Creative Cloud and “collaborative workflow” and the cracks began to show. The computers were fast enough, and the software was amazing, but there was something holding us back… can you guess what it was?
We didn’t need bigger hard drives and faster RAID’s, what we needed was for everyone to work together from one place; we needed to collaborate. Well, too bad. Soon the idea of buying a never-ending supply of external hard drives to go with our new cameras bummed us out no matter what version of Thunderbolt it supported. If nobody was going to give us what we wanted, we would have to do it ourselves. Over the last 4 years we reluctantly became experts on anything and everything related to storage, networking, workflow, and digital filmmaking. We’ve tested, broken, and bricked more expensive pieces of silicon and asked more dumb questions to very smart people than we’d care to admit, but our cause was noble. We just want a better way to make movies.
During our R&D phase we realized that even the “big guys” with their half-million dollar SANs and complex fibre channel networks weren’t happy either. Editors on a shared network practically needed an IT degree to cut a movie, as well as anger management classes to cope with beachballs and latency. It turns out this storage problem was much bigger than we thought, and it became crystal clear that the storage technology that made the digital revolution possible a decade ago wasn’t going to cut it in today’s world of modern content creation and consumption. The entire model had to be reimagined; we were back to the drawing board. Fast-forward to today and you’ve got a technology company run by story tellers who are constantly trying to push the envelope. We hope you like what we’ve done.

Miracle Theatre
History
The Miracle Theatre is located on Capitol Hill in the historic Barracks Row neighborhood. The original building, the Meader Theater, opened on December 27, 1909 as a vaudeville theatre with a mix of entertainment, including motion pictures and live performances. The building continued to operate as a movie theatre under several names until 1960: Meader, New Meader, Family and Academy. During the theatre’s many transitions and renovations it showed a variety of films including silent, triple-feature westerns and in the late 1950s, foreign films. In 1962, The People’s Church purchased the building and served the Capitol Hill community for half a century. On March 23, 2011, National Community Church purchased it, launching its seventh location in the metro DC area and embarking on a mission to revive the building’s rich history as a movie house and live entertainment destination.

The Miracle Theatre is a second-run movie theater and live performance venue, and the newest oldest movie theater in Washington, DC. 48 Hours Film Project
The 48 Hour Film Project is a wild and sleepless weekend in which you and a team make a movie – write, shoot, and edit – in just 48 hours. On Friday night, teams draw a genre from a hat. They are then given a character, prop and line to include in their films. On Sunday night, in a wild dash to the drop off event, the film is turned in – and teams celebrate. The film is then screened at a local theater in front of an audience of filmmakers, friends and families.

Arlington Independent Media (AIM) is a nonprofit membership organization and community media center in Arlington, Virginia. We provide training and access to media technologies, and facilitate the creation of video, audio, web and digital content. Since 1982, AIM has continuously provided a video production equipment, facilities, training, and access to a basic cable television channel to all on a first-come, first-served basis. DC Environmental Film Festival
The Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital (DCEFF) is the world’s premier showcase of environmentally themed films. Devoted to screening short film from Edinburgh, Scotland and around the world, The ESFF evolved from the Leith Short Film Festival in 2011 and has shown everything – from the first film made in Somalia in 20 years, to Oscar nominated shorts from Australia, the USA and Ireland, as well as short films smuggled out of China and Iran – and hosted visiting film-makers from China, Russia, Italy, Spain, Germany, Holland and all over the UK. We have hosted Q and A sessions with Mark Kermode, held pavement cinema screenings at pancake kiosk in town, hosted a night of Shetlandic shorts with visiting Viking warriors, and we’ve taken some of our best short films on tour to the Sardinia Film Festival and also to the Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival. Our plans for next year include holding screenings in Tokyo at Short Shorts Film Festival, Japan’s biggest short film event, and we’re planning on holding screenings of animated shorts, curating short film nights for Hidden Door Arts Festival and much more!

For over 30 years, Filmfest DC has sought to keep pace with global cultural and social activities. Today we find ourselves in a conundrum of opposing beliefs and shifting governmental policies, which have often divided citizens and forged a culture of “us vs. them.” As a reflection of our times, this year’s festival has taken on a special focus on issues ripped from today’s headlines in hopes of increasing clarity and civil discourse.
Our Opening Night feature, This is Our Land, looks at what can happen when a community faced with new immigrants and threatened job security becomes the target of right-wing operatives. The Justice Matters section of social issues films has been expanded and this year we have added Division & Debate, a new section exploring timely contentious issues. GI Film Festival
The GI Film Festival (GIFF) is a 501 c(3) non-profit educational organization dedicated to sharing the military experience in and out of the arena of war. The festival is the first in the nation to exclusively celebrate the successes and sacrifices of the service member through the medium of film. The GIFF presents films from new and established international and domestic filmmakers that honor the heroic stories of the American Armed Forces and the worldwide struggle for freedom and liberty. Some of the films screened are voted on by fans. Others are screened for the first time. All will in some way express the courage and selflessness of our fighting men and women and the value of their work.
The GI Film Festival is open to filmmakers of every experience level, from first-timers to veteran directors and producers. Prizes are awarded annually to winners in three main categories: feature, documentary, and film shorts. Golden Triangle BID
The Golden Triangle BID is an award-winning non-profit 501(c)(6) corporation that works to enhance the Golden Triangle — the 43 block neighborhood that stretches from Dupont Circle to Pennsylvania Avenue. The primary focus of the BID is to provide a clean, safe, and vibrant environment within this remarkable neighborhood, and to retain and attract businesses to the Golden Triangle.
Founded in 1997, the Golden Triangle BID encourages economic development through capital improvement projects, a variety of engaging events, and public art projects. The BID also strives to increase quality of life through public safety and maintenance services. The BID is funded by a special tax that is paid by property owners within the neighborhood. The Golden Triangle BID’s working budget for FY2017 is $5,440,720 and can be divided as follows: $2,159,955 for Ambassador and Safe and Secure Programs; $1,096,000 for Public Realm and Capital Programs; $998,825 for Economic Development and Promoting the Brand; and $1,185,940 for Administration.
The BID connects its members to numerous resources, events, and information in and around the neighborhood. The staff serve as a first point of contact for member questions and issues and act as a key liaison between businesses and many city agencies. Together with corporate and government partners, the BID develops and implements programs that strengthen the vitality of the Golden Triangle. Greenbelt Access Television
Greenbelt Access Television (GATe) is a non-profit organization developed to bring public access to the Greenbelt area. A Greenbelt City Council appointed committee was appointed to develop an independent organization to foster public cable access. In 1986, a charter was incorporated establishing GATe as a non-profit, 501 C(3) corporation. In 1997, with the accumulated fees from over the years, the Committee was able to hire Kjell Forsting, a pioneer for cable in his native Sweden. Mr. Forsting had the foresight to purchase a digital editing suite for the newly established GATE Studio in the renovated Community Center. In 2005, GATe sponsored its first Utopia Film Festival which continues every year due to the efforts of a volunteer committee. Each October, videos from around the world are screened in various spaces around Greenbelt. GATe has established its own designated channels on Comcast channel 77 and Verizon FiOS channel 19. Today, we keep Kjell Forsting’s vision alive by maintaining the digital quality he saw as the future of video production.

Hillyer Art Space is a contemporary gallery dedicated to serving the public with quality exhibitions and programming. Immigration Film Festival
October 20 – 23, 2016
We are a group of unpaid volunteers working year-round to produce an annual film festival bringing stories of immigrants and refugees to Capital area audiences. The Immigration Film Festival is under the wing of the Washington Ethical Society, a nonprofit, humanistic religious congregation. Since it serves as the Festival’s fiscal sponsor, all donations are 100% tax free and dedicated exclusively to the Festival. Our goal is to put faces on immigrants and tell the stories of global immigration through film, the most popular of media. We do this not only to entertain but also to inform and inspire action. We live in an interconnected web of being. Recognizing this, we aim to motivate viewers to take action to correct the injustices that lead to migration and the dislocations that result from immigration.

Japanese Information and Cultural Center
The Japan Information & Culture Center (JICC) is a part of the Public Affairs Section of the Embassy of Japan in Washington D.C. The JICC is committed to enriching the relationship between Japan and the United States through an active, vibrant cultural exchange. Now twenty-five years old, the Penn Quarter Neighborhood Association, PQNA for short, counts over 170 organizations as members. The PQNA serves its members by promoting the many activities its members sponsor, whether it’s museum programs, lectures and films, theatrical performances, art exhibitions, wine dinners, book signings, lectures, or musical performances. Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia
This year Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & ASIA), a qualifying film festival for the annual Academy Awards® and one of Asia’s largest international short film festivals, will be held in Tokyo (5 venues) and Yokohama (1 venue) from 1 June (Thu) through 25 June (Sun).
Nearly 9,000 films from over 100 countries and regions around the world were in the running, with the cream of the crop — some 250 titles — being selected to screen at the festival.

Stone Soup Films
Vision: Nonprofits have greater social impact when they are empowered by effective storytelling. Stone Soup Films was founded in 2008 as a nonprofit production company that builds the capacity of worthy organizations by developing a pro-bono communications strategy represented in a professional promotional film.
We combine the assets of collaboration, mentorship, education, and community service by joining the volunteer efforts of hundreds of expert and novice filmmakers. Our goal is to tell the real-life stories of how local groups are transforming the lives of individuals in need. We help organizations tell their stories by going to the individuals they serve, and letting those clients’ stories of transformation be emblematic of the organization’s important work.
There is no doubt that good storytelling can make all the difference in their ability to connect with the target audience, whether it be for fundraising, information or visibility purposes. Any nonprofit serving the people of Washington, DC that does not have a current film or substantial communications budget is invited to apply for a Stone Soup film. The process includes developing a communications strategy and a marketing and distribution plan for the finished film. If you have professional film experience or want to get involved on any aspect of production, please join us as a volunteer! Student filmmakers with an interest in serving the community are invited to apply for a formal internship.

Sunderland Shorts
In 2006, Sunderland became the first and only non-capital city to sign a Friendship Agreement with Washington DC. Since then, the two cities have been working in partnership to develop economic, educational and cultural relationships, providing the people of Sunderland with new experiences and opportunities.
Sunderland Shorts Film Festival is one of many creative industry initiatives that have been developed through this partnership and has seen creative professionals from both DC and Sunderland participate in exhibitions and academic exchange visits.
Established in 2014 and now in its third year, Sunderland Shorts was conceived and developed in collaboration with DC Shorts, a film festival with a thirteen year history, which has gone from strength to strength and is now one of the most respected film festivals in the USA.

The Documentary Center @ GWU
The Documentary Center at the The George Washington University sponsors a wide-range of programs devoted to non-fiction film education, production, and exhibition. The Documentary Center is a chartered center under the umbrella of the Center for Innovative Media within the School of Media and Public Affairs.
Our centerpiece educational offering is the annual six-month Institute for Documentary Filmmaking that runs annually from January through June. We also offer specialty programs such as our prestigious International Emerging Filmmakers Fellowship. Finally, we offer a number of short courses and workshops such as our on-line courses, and customized story-telling workshops offered through SMPA’s Executive and Professional Education.
At the Documentary Center, non-fiction film comes to DC audiences through our Center Screen Showcase, and through our collaborations with partner organizations such as Docs in Progress and Women in Film and Video. Finally, you can see Documentary Center produced award-winning films across all platforms at home and abroad.

Tryka Film Coalition

Utopia Film Festival

The Utopia Film Festival is held annually in Greenbelt, Maryland, located near Washington, D.C. Greenbelt was one of America’s first planned communities, a New Deal city built by the Roosevelt administration in the 1930’s. The Utopia Film Festival, now in its 13th year, takes its name from the idealistic origins of Greenbelt, described by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt as “the first garden community in the land planned for the uplift and unfolding of the human spirit.” Utopia seeks documentaries, feature films, shorts and animation which creatively explore the personal, social, political, cultural and environmental issues which challenge humanity’s never-ending quest for a better world.

Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts
Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts began in 1983 as a unique collaboration of lawyers and artists to fulfill a mission to serve artists in need of legal knowledge and assistance. Since then, WALA has supported artistic expression and creative innovation serving the legal needs of the arts and cultural communities in Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia. WALA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that provides access to education, advocacy and legal services through workshops and seminars, legal clinics and pro-bono referral services for creatives and cultural organizations. More than 350 of Washington’s top lawyers and law firms participate as volunteers in WALA’s legal services programs.

Washington DC Film Critics Association
Founded in 2002, The Washington DC Area Film Critics Association (WAFCA) comprises professional DC-based film critics with affiliations in television, radio, print and the internet. As of 2016, WAFCA has grown to include 50 dedicated members from the District, Maryland and Virginia. Our group works to advocate complete freedom of expression in film and film criticism – including the individual critic’s right to disagree with the opinions of their colleagues, and to promote public awareness that film in an important art form as well as a means of entertainment. WAFCA maintains stringent requirements for membership and our members must adhere to all studio-imposed review embargoes. Our members vote every December to recognize the very best achievements of the cinematic year. Over the brief history of the association, WAFCA has garnered international attention, respect and credibility for the independent-minded approach that the group has taken in honoring Hollywood’s elite, often serving as a bellwether for identifying both Golden Globe and Academy Award winners.

Washington Jewish Film Festival

One of the largest and most respected Jewish film festivals in North America, the Washington Jewish Film Festival (WJFF) is an international exhibition of cinema that celebrates the diversity of Jewish history, culture and experience through the moving image. In addition to the annual festival, the WJFF presents an ongoing, year-round film series, in our home venue at the Edlavitch DCJCC. The WJFF annually serves over 15,000 people through 80+ screenings, nearly all of which are regional, US or world premieres. Most screenings are followed by discussions with guest filmmakers and subject matter experts.

Washington West Film Festival
Intelligent story not only entertains, but it truly can change the world. A well-told story captures our imagination, makes us laugh, forces us to reflect, and inspires transformation. WERA’s mission is to enlighten, enrich, and entertain Arlington’s diverse community by promoting and facilitating independent radio. On December 6, 2015, Arlington, Virginia entered a new era with the introduction of WERA-LP 96.7 onto the FM dial. A project of Arlington Independent Media, WERA’s programming is produced by and for the community. West Virginia Filmmakers Festival

The first West Virginia FILMmakers Festival was held in the spring of 2001 at the Landmark Studio for the Arts in historic Sutton, West Virginia. Co-founded by Kevin Carpenter and Steve Fesenmaier to showcase West Virginia’s best filmmakers. Films are now shown primarily at the Elk Theatre, a Historic 1930s one-screen theater on Main Street in downtown Sutton. Filmmaking seminars, other festival activities, and after-parties with live music are held at the Landmark Studio for the Arts.
Hosted every October, the festival has become the singular celebration of West Virginia Filmmakers. The festival is characterized by enlightening films, networking opportunities, live music, and great parties. The West Virginia FILMmakers Festival is a wonderful venue for meeting filmmakers, actors, and industry contacts, while experiencing the latest produced films reflecting trends, techniques, and technology.

With film screenings, panel discussions, and networking, the 2nd Annual Wheaton Film Festival is a great showcase for filmmakers and film fans. Everyone is invited to come to Wheaton, MD on Friday, November 11, 2016 at 3pm – check out Eventbrite for tickets. The selected filmmakers will each get to introduce their film live to the attending audience and to answer some brief Q&A.
We will have two education panels. The tentative topics are:
• Filmmaking A to Z – a discussion of the overall process of filmmaking and distribution.
• Entertainment Law 101 presented by Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts (WALA)
